ABOUT ME
Dr. Timothy Siepel is a medical professional with over 50 years of experience in various fields. After graduating from SUNY Buffalo Medical School, he completed his internship at Buffalo General Hospital, then served in the Indian Health Service on the Northern Cheyenne Reservation in Lame Deer, Montana. Following that, he joined the Concord Medical Group in Springville, NY, where he worked for 13 years. He left there in 1985 to form a group practice called Service Medical PC, which he sold to Catholic Health in 2008. He worked for two years in Derby, NY, then joined the Primary Care Center at Bertrand Chaffee Hospital in Springville. In 2022, he left there and again formed his own practice, Tim Siepel MD PC, where he works today.
In the early part of his career, Dr. Siepel’s practice focused on obstetrics and pediatrics, according to his belief that the mother and child are a unit best treated together. As Dr. Siepel aged, his patients aged with him, and in 1998 he retired from obstetrics. He now focuses on adult medicine. However, those 26 years of obstetrics provided him with a familiarity with women’s health, which continues to benefit his female patients today.
Dr. Siepel’s interest in medicine has always been varied and wide-ranging. In 1986, he developed an interest in ultrasonography and pursued studies through various courses. Eventually, he passed the registry exams in general ultrasonography, abdominal, and gynecological, earning the RDMS credential. Later, he passed the exam in vascular technology, obtaining the RVT credential. He also studied echocardiography and musculoskeletal ultrasound. Dr. Siepel applies his knowledge of ultrasound to the general practice of medicine. In 2000, he published, along with others, an article in the Journal of Family Practice called “The Ultrasound-Assisted Physical Exam: The Routine Health Evaluation of the Elderly.” This article demonstrated that the addition of ultrasound to general examinations can reveal many diagnoses that standard exams might miss, and that early discovery of such conditions can positively impact health and survival. This article received little attention at the time, but years later, Dr. Siepel was invited to lecture at the University of California, Irvine, where he learned they considered him one of the pioneers of ultrasound in primary care. Irvine had even added ultrasound to their medical curriculum from day one.
Dr. Siepel believes lifelong learning is essential in medicine. He passed the certification exams for Family Practice in 1987 and 1994, and in 1986, he passed the board exam for a specialty in geriatrics. He has applied his knowledge of ultrasound to enhance his ability to make more accurate diagnoses in musculoskeletal medicine, cardiology, gynecology, and general medicine. He is also interested in psychiatry and mental illness. In 1997, he was honored as “Outstanding Teacher of Medicine” by the Family Practice Residency Program at Deaconess Hospital of Buffalo.
Dr. Siepel and his wife, Ginny, have lived in West Valley since 1972. They have a farm where they raise Scottish Highland cattle. Ginny is a retired teacher from West Valley Central School. They have three grown children: Adam, a research scientist at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory on Long Island; Gina, a freelance artist in Massachusetts; and Leah, who provides online education from her home near Kingston, NY.
Currently, Dr. Siepel participates in Independent Health, Highmark, Medicare, and Medicaid. Cash payments are also accepted.
MY SPECIALTIES
GYNECOLOGY
Dr. Siepel delivered over 1100 babies during his career, making it a significant portion of his practice. He had a keen interest in both obstetrics and gynecology, and learned to perform colposcopies and biopsies of the cervix and endometrium himself.
GERIATRICS
Dr. Siepel passed the examinations to qualify as a specialist in geriatrics in 1985. Geriatric care focuses on health and well-being for older adults, addressing their unique medical and social needs. Dr. Siepel's extensive experience with various patient populations likely made him an excellent candidate for this specialty.
PEDIATRICS
Since Dr. Siepel's practice revolved around caring for families, it was a natural extension for him to continue caring for children after birth. He provided pediatric care alongside his obstetric services for many years.
ULTRASOUND
In 1986, Dr. Siepel developed an interest in ultrasound and took the necessary training to become a registered diagnostic medical sonographer (RDMS) and registered vascular technologist (RVT). He used his expertise in both conventional physical examination and ultrasound to create the "Ultrasound Assisted Physical Examination" (USA-PE), which he published a study on in 1994 with Dr. Thomas Rosenthal, then Chairman of the Department of Family Practice at SUNY Buffalo. The USA-PE combined traditional physical examination techniques with ultrasound to enhance diagnostic accuracy and effectiveness.
MUSCULOSKELETAL MEDICINE
Dr. Siepel pursued an interest in musculoskeletal medicine and took several courses offered by James Cyriax of London, which focused on orthopedic medicine at the time. He learned techniques such as spinal manipulation and joint injections of steroids to help diagnose and treat various conditions affecting the muscles, bones, and joints.
PRIMARY CARE
Dr. Siepel was invited to lecture on the application of ultrasound to primary care at the University of California, Irvine, in 2014. He was considered one of the pioneers of ultrasound in primary care due to his innovative approach and expertise in this field.
DERMATOLOGY
Dr. Siepel also had an interest in dermatology and treated many skin conditions. He performed several skin biopsies and provided treatment for skin cancers. His experience in dermatology likely stemmed from his broad interest in medicine and the various needs of his patients.
